X thread
An X thread is a sequence of connected posts on X (formerly Twitter) — typically 4 to 20 posts — used to develop an argument, share a story, or break down a longer piece in a platform-native format.
Threads work on X because the platform’s post-length limit (originally 280 characters; longer for X Premium) makes single-post depth difficult. A thread breaks the constraint into a structural advantage: each post in the sequence is a discrete beat, and readers self-select into the long-form content by continuing to scroll.
Strong threads follow a recognisable pattern: a hook post that promises payoff, 5–15 body posts that deliver in chunks, and a close post with a CTA (often "follow for more" or a link). Each post in the thread is independently engaging — readers drop off if any single post fails.
On X, threads materially outperform single posts for reach and follower growth. A brand that doesn’t use threads is publishing at the platform’s constraint instead of its strength.
