Social listening

Social listening is the practice of monitoring social media for mentions of a brand, its competitors, its category keywords, and adjacent conversations — used for response, strategy, and competitive intelligence.

Listening tools track mentions across platforms (X, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, LinkedIn, web) and aggregate them into feeds, sentiment scores, and alerts. Common use cases include catching customer complaints before they escalate, surfacing user-generated content worth amplifying, identifying competitors’ moves, and finding adjacent conversations the brand could authentically join.

Depth varies enormously across tools. Lightweight listening watches direct @-mentions; deep listening monitors thousands of keywords with sentiment analysis, geographic filtering, and influencer mapping. The signal-to-noise ratio is the main quality dimension — tools that surface relevant signals without drowning the user in noise.

Why it matters

Brands without listening are reacting to whatever shows up in their notifications — which is a fraction of what’s being said about them. Listening turns the conversation surface into a structured input.
